Why Join

General practices that are members of GenPro may apply to transfer to thePHO.  Under the terms of the Contracted Provider Agreement, general practices must give a minimum of 6 months notice of their intention to leave their existing PHO.

Contracts for services will be negotiated to take effect from 1 July annually. Therefore individual general practices should apply to join thePHO and give notice to leave their current PHO by the preceding 31 December.  

Act now to ensure you do not miss the chance to join thePHO for contracts to take effect from 1 July 2026. 

Please submit your expression of interest, by completing the form below by Sunday 14 December 2025.

Practices MUST also ensure that six months' notice is given to their current PHO by Wednesday 31 December 2025. This can be done using this letter template.

Please bcc copy your six months' notice to application@thepho.org.nz so that we can be assured of your contract compliance obligations.

The full PHO transfer process will subsequently include a more detailed data capture with the full details of your practice.

Practices should note that this process is non-binding at this stage. Health New Zealand have confirmed that practices retain the right to remain with their existing PHO after 1 July 2026 if alternative back-to-back contracts cannot otherwise be agreed with another PHO of their choice.
