thePHO Equity Statement

thePHO funds medical centres, urgent care facilities and other primary health care providers right across Aotearoa New Zealand. From Te Tai Tokerau in the north all the way to Southland. We recognise that equitable healthcare is essential for the well-being of all New Zealanders and acknowledge the unique place of Māori as tangata whenua - the people of this land.

In Aotearoa New Zealand people have differences in health that are not only avoidable, but unfair and unjust. Equity recognises that different people with different levels of advantage require different approaches and resources to get equitable health outcomes. We acknowledge the impact of inequity on all people and accept that more work is required to support other communities that suffer from avoidable, unjust and unfair equity in the spirit of manākitanga (compassion).

As part of our mission, we actively work to address disparities in healthcare outcomes. thePHO believes that different perspectives and experiences make us stronger, and we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment for our service providers, staff and the communities they serve. We aim to ensure that healthcare is culturally responsive, and patient-centered.

Our commitment to equity is aligned with the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, where we support the rights of Māori to participate fully in healthcare design and delivery, ensuring that Māori communities have equitable access to care and are provided the resources to achieve their health aspirations. We believe that advancing equity is not only a matter of social justice but is critical to the sustainability and future of general practice in New Zealand.
