Tony Wai
Chief Executive
Tony Wai is the Chief Executive Officer of thePHO. He is a senior New Zealand health leader and Chartered Accountant with more than two decades of executive and governance experience across primary care, digital health, aged care, and disability services.
Tony most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of Third Age Health. He previously held senior executive roles at ProCare Health, including Interim Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and General Manager Corporate Services. In these roles, he led finance, technology, and system enablement across one of New Zealand’s largest primary care networks.
Tony is recognised for his focus on sustainable operating models, equitable access to care, and the practical use of digital and data-enabled systems to strengthen frontline services. His leadership approach centres on strong commercial discipline, clear performance measures, and ensuring investment reaches provider practices.
As Chief Executive, Tony is focused on building a national PHO that reduces duplication, supports digital innovation, and delivers clear value for money. His priority is to ensure practices have the confidence, capability, and operational support required to operate sustainably while improving access and outcomes for patients across New Zealand.
